Napoli is a city that is a stage, for the expressivity of its people, for its own musical tradition, for its own variety of theater and cinema, not to mention its beautiful unique language – Neapolitan – that is featured in so many plays, movies, and – of course – songs. Napoli has given so much to the world and one of its many gifts has been the Neapolitan theater of the early 20th century: the Cafe’ Chantant, Neapolitan style, the macchiette, the variety shows that have delighted so many people for many decades. To honor one of the performances coming to In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY in 2023 that pays homage to this form of theater, the March gathering of On The Italian Stage will transport you to Napoli a century ago. Get ready for sciantose, comici, ‘a mossa e tante risate!
