Gomorrah: The Play by Roberto Saviano and Mario Gelardi

Translated and adapted by Dave Johnson and Laura Caparrotti in collaboration with Rocco Sisto

Gomorrah, set in the suburbs of Naples, Italy, is built as a “non-fiction novel” and tells the story of a local journalist, Roberto Saviano, as he investigates the world of the Neapolitan Mafia, known as The Camorra.  Founded as a means of survival, The Camorra, manipulates the ideals of honor and manhood and devolves into a cancer that threatens to kill not only the victims, but also the host. Saviano links five disparate lives of educated young men and teenage gang members embroiled in this criminal system that extends from the slums of Naples to the fashion houses of Milan and beyond. The play demonstrates how the criminal element in a small suburb has tragic and deadly repercussions to a city, a country, and ultimately, the world.

THE BIRTH OF THE MAFIA
In 1412, three Spanish knights, Osso, Mastrosso and Carcagnosso, escaped from Spain for having killed to defend the honor of their sister. They took refuge in Favignana, a Sicilian island full of caves and underwater corridors, it’s almost impossible to find anyone in hiding. The three knights stayed on this island for twenty-five years, where they wrote the set of rules:  the code, of the honorable society. Osso went to Sicily and founded the Mafia, Mastrosso went to Calabria and founded the ‘Ndrangheta, and Carcagnosso went to Campania and founded the Camorra.

And in 2012:

WOMEN WITHOUT ESCAPE
Three one acts by famous Italian writer DINO BUZZATI

Translated by Natasha Lardera

Presented in English followed by its original Italian Version. US Premiere.

Dino Buzzati, the “Italian Kafka”, wrote these monologues in the late ‘50s but there is nothing of the “dolce vita” in these women trapped into their lives like passionate and proud victims of a fate they can’t control. Solitude, magic, absurd, wait and death are the dominant themes of these ironic and at the same time dramatic monologues presented in a dazzling new English translation, followed by their original, evocative Italian.

Deliver Me from Evil (Liberami dal Male)

Liberami dal Male, a one-person play of the factual story of Marco Maltese, recounts abuses during his time in seminary in Sicily.
